QUBS RIS and scanner connectivity
DICOM modality worklists for your imaging clinic
Included in all current QUBS plans.
QUBS connects patient and examination details from its RIS workflow with modality worklists, helping staff avoid retyping booking information on compatible scanners. Review your equipment and connection requirements so the right scheduled examination is available to select before imaging begins.
What does a DICOM worklist do?
A modality worklist (MWL) makes scheduled patient and examination information available to compatible imaging equipment. The operator selects the intended examination and checks the details before scanning, reducing repeated entry between reception and the scanner.
In the DICOM standard, the modality queries the worklist service for matching scheduled work. Worklist information is separate from image transfer and storage. See the DICOM Basic Worklist Management standard.
From a QUBS booking to the scanner
- Prepare the booking: record the patient and examination in the QUBS scheduling workflow.
- Make details available: the configured worklist connection provides the scheduled information required by the modality.
- Select and check: the operator retrieves the worklist on the scanner, selects the examination and verifies the patient details.
- Acquire and store images: scanning and transfer to PACS follow the configured imaging workflow.
The worklist helps keep booking and imaging information consistent. Staff still need to check patient identity and the intended examination before proceeding.
Which scanners can connect?
Check the individual device, not just the modality name. When reviewing ultrasound, X-ray, CT, MRI or other imaging equipment, ask the supplier whether DICOM Modality Worklist is supported and enabled on that model and software version.
- Provide the scanner model, software version and DICOM conformance statement.
- Confirm any worklist licence or option required by the equipment supplier.
- Review the patient identifiers, examination details and scheduled information the device expects.
- Agree the connection and any local equipment or installation needed for the clinic network.
QUBS supports a range of clinic and imaging workflows; the connection to your particular device needs assessment. A DICOM label alone does not establish worklist compatibility.
What should you check before opening your clinic?
Include worklist setup when planning equipment installation, rather than leaving it until your first patient appointment. Ask QUBS and the equipment supplier to agree who configures each side of the connection and how it will be tested.
- Create a representative test booking and retrieve it on the intended scanner.
- Check the displayed patient identifiers and examination information against the booking.
- Check how changed or cancelled appointments appear after the worklist is refreshed.
- Verify that acquired images reach the intended patient and examination in PACS.
- Agree what staff should do if the worklist is empty, details differ or the connection is unavailable.
For an existing clinic changing systems, include these checks in your RIS migration plan.
Multi-site and mobile imaging considerations
For multi-site groups, review each scanner's location, modality and intended appointment list. Test site selection and worklist filtering as part of configuration.
For mobile imaging, teams can perform scans offline and upload them to QUBS for online processing when internet access is available. That does not establish offline worklist availability. Agree the fallback for selecting and entering examination details when the worklist connection is unavailable.
Worklist, PACS and reporting: which part does what?
- RIS: coordinates bookings, patient information and the clinic workflow.
- Modality worklist: supplies scheduled information for selection on compatible imaging equipment.
- PACS: stores images and makes them available for viewing.
- Reporting and delivery: support preparation, authorisation and delivery of the report.
Assess these connections together when choosing your software. A successful worklist query alone does not confirm that image transfer or report delivery is configured.
Pricing and setup responsibilities
DICOM modality worklist is included in all current QUBS plans. Review your devices, connections, installation and testing with the team. Check with your equipment supplier whether the scanner requires a separate worklist licence or option; any supplier charges are separate from your QUBS plan.
Bring your device list to a discussion of QUBS integrations. Review ongoing support responsibilities in the Support Policy and with your equipment supplier.
Frequently asked questions
What is a DICOM modality worklist?
A DICOM modality worklist, or MWL, lets compatible imaging equipment retrieve scheduled examination and patient information. Staff select the correct scheduled examination on the scanner instead of retyping those details.
Does QUBS support DICOM modality worklists?
Yes. QUBS supports sending patient and examination details from its RIS workflow to modality worklists. The scanner connection and fields required for your equipment need to be configured and checked.
Will it work with my ultrasound, X-ray, CT or MRI scanner?
Compatibility depends on the scanner model, software, enabled DICOM worklist option and configuration. Provide the device details and DICOM conformance statement so the connection can be assessed and tested.
Is a modality worklist the same as PACS?
No. A modality worklist supplies scheduled patient and examination information to imaging equipment. PACS handles image storage and access. Check both the worklist connection and image transfer when setting up your scanner.
Can we use modality worklists across multiple sites?
QUBS supports multi-site clinic workflows. Review the worklist connection, location and modality selection for each scanner so each team sees the examinations intended for its service.
Does scanning offline mean the worklist works offline?
No. Mobile teams can scan offline and upload scans to QUBS for processing when internet is available. Worklist availability during a loss of connectivity depends on the equipment and connection setup and must be checked separately.
What do we need to arrange before setup?
Bring your scanner models, software versions, DICOM conformance statements, locations and proposed workflow. Agree the required worklist fields, network connection, installation responsibilities and testing with QUBS and your equipment supplier.
Is DICOM modality worklist included in QUBS plans?
Yes. DICOM modality worklist is included in all current QUBS plans. Check with your equipment supplier whether your scanner requires a separate worklist licence or option; any supplier charges are separate from your QUBS plan.
